The Project

CMC’s partner is undertaking a major multi-year grid investment project that would upgrade the infrastructure of the entire State’s electrical grid to cope with increased demand, alternative power sources and the impact of extreme weather conditions.

Part of the grid investment project involves installation of hundreds of miles of underground transmission lines, which requires experienced transmission line inspectors.

Since this is a very specialist task, requiring specific skills and knowledge, experience of leading large construction crews and a willingness to work on sites covering miles of pipelines, often in the middle of nowhere, good Transmission Line Inspectors are difficult to find.

This is why CMC’s specialist consulting services are such a valuable resource for T&D businesses – rather than spending time and money trying to find an experienced Transmission Line Inspector, our partners can rely on us to provide the services they need directly, from our extensive global workbench of expert consultants.

The Challenge

We were confident we could deliver the services they needed – but they had another challenge for us.

When our associate, Elizabeth, was discussing the requirements, the topic of Equity, Diversity & Inclusion came up – as it often does with businesses we work with. So Elizabeth asked “have you ever worked with a female Transmission Line Inspector?”

They hadn’t, but were very enthusiastic about it, recognizing the benefits of having women engineering experts on a project, particularly leading a team. This could be a positive step to help improve their inclusivity on site and encourage other women engineering experts to work with them.

We love a challenge and, though we didn’t have a woman Transmission Line Inspector available to work in the region at the time, we’re committed to sourcing the right consultants beyond our immediate workbench.

Our Solution

Elizabeth contacted a female distribution line worker who we’d placed on another project to see if she had any contacts, and she advised a particular social media group that could be useful.

Very quickly we had Lisa, a Canada-based Transmission Line Inspector who’d grown up within the industry and had built up experience working with big crews. She fit the requirements perfectly, was available to work in Georgia and excited to be part of such a high profile project. We onboarded her quickly as a CMC consultant and deployed her on site
