Overview
We are seeking a skilled and experienced GIS Technician to join our dynamic team in Birmingham, Alabama. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Geographic Information Systems within the utility sector, with a minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience. Responsibilities
- Develop, maintain, and update Geographic Information System (GIS) databases and data layers to support utility operations.
- Analyze spatial data and produce detailed maps and reports to assist in asset management, project planning, and decision-making processes.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure GIS data integrity and alignment with utility infrastructure.
- Troubleshoot and resolve GIS-related technical issues promptly.
- Assist in the integration of GIS with other enterprise systems and workflows.
- Support field operations by providing accurate GIS data and technical assistance.
- Continuously improve GIS processes and workflows through innovation and best practices.
- Ensure compliance with data quality standards and contribute to data governance initiatives.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years experience working as a GIS Technician, preferably within the utility industry.
- Proficient with GIS software such as ArcGIS, QGIS, and related spatial analysis tools.
- Strong understanding of utility systems and infrastructure mapping.
- Experience with database management and spatial data integration.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Effective communication skills, including the ability to collaborate with diverse teams.
- Commitment to continuous learning and professional growth.
- Knowledge of scripting languages (Python, SQL) is a plus.
Day-to-Day
- Coordinate with utility engineers and planners to capture and update GIS data.
- Generate maps and visualizations to support operational and strategic projects.
- Perform regular quality checks to maintain the accuracy of GIS datasets.
- Participate in team meetings to discuss project progress and strategy.
- Provide technical GIS support to field staff and office personnel.
- Stay informed about the latest GIS technologies and industry developments to enhance functionality and efficiency.
